Congratulations to Dr. Pamela Hoodless for receiving a Discovery Grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). 

Dr. Hoodless, a distinguished researcher and Interim Head, Basic and Translational Research at BC Cancer, will use the grant to support her work in defining cell lineages and plasticity in the developing liver.

British Columbia’s first dedicated inpatient clinical trials unit for early-phase therapies in blood cancers has been launched by Vancouver Coastal Health in collaboration with BC Cancer physicians and scientists. Located at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), the new Hematology Research Unit will deliver revolutionary therapies — including first-in-human treatments such as advanced immunotherapies like CAR T-cell therapy — to patients with relapsed or treatment-resistant hematological diseases.

BC Cancer researchers receive Cancer Research Society’s Doctoral Research Awards

Three BC Cancer graduate students are 2024 recipients of Doctoral Research Awards from the Cancer Research Society (CRS), receiving new funding to support their innovative research aimed at better understanding cancer.

Doctoral Research Awards invests in the future of cancer research through the support of graduate students pursuing cancer research at an eligible Canadian institution.

BC Cancer’s 2024 Cancer Emerging Multidisciplinary Research Programs supports research teams to initiate novel multidisciplinary research projects that aim to tackle well-defined issues or problems that affect patients living with cancer or at risk of developing cancer. Funding for the programs is provided through the BC Ministry of Health in collaboration with the BC Cancer Foundation.

2024 Emerging Multidisciplinary Research Programs Recipients: 

Congratulations to Lorenzo Lindo of Hay Lab (Terry Fox Laboratory) for receiving a Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) Research Training Award, with joint funding from the Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI).

The award is tied to the project titled, "Engineering CAR-T Cells to Overcome Immune Suppression and Enhance Efficacy in Multiple Myeloma.”

Dr. Poul Sorensen (Molecular Oncology), with co-investigators Dr. Kevin Hay (Terry Fox Laboratory) and Dr. Wei Li (University of Pittsburgh), received a Project Grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) for their project titled, “Targeting metabolic vulnerabilities in childhood cancers using immunotherapy.”

Congratulations to Ms. Yingying Liu of the Collings Stevens Chronic Leukemia Research Laboratory, Terry Fox Laboratory, for being awarded a prestigious Leukaemia UK International Scholarship.

BC Cancer 2024 Summer Research Studentship competition, sponsored by the BC Cancer Foundation, supports senior undergraduate university students and/or junior medical or dental students seeking hands-on training in cancer research in British Columbia. These summer studentships may address any discipline of cancer research including clinical, translational, basic, behavioural and population research areas.
