World-class cancer research that transforms the lives of patients in BC.

Research at BC Cancer is conducted by many nationally and internationally recognized scientists in over sixty labs at the BC Cancer Research Institute and BC Cancer sites across the province. The BC Cancer Research Institute is organized through departments and programs with various themes. These comprise activities that explore basic mechanisms and technology development relevant to all areas of cancer research, cancer control research, clinical studies and clinical trials, and population health and service research. The research portfolio also supports internationally recognized facilities and platforms in genomics, bioinformatics, imaging, drug development and tissue banking.

BCCRI Building

The BC Cancer Research Institute - a landmark in the Vancouver skyline

This state-of-the-art research centre designed by Richard Henriquez with the IBI group opened in 2005, and was the first LEED Gold-certified lab in Canada.

Elements of the building’s design represent the research carried out within; a multi-floor spiral staircase joining the office floors represents an oversized DNA spiral, the multi-coloured vertical strips on the office block windows are an abstracted view of chromosome 8, and the laboratory block features many large round petri-dish-like windows.

The building is 233,530 square feet, and includes a 220-seat lecture theatre, seminar rooms, library, staff lounge area, bicycle storage, shower facilities and support spaces.

Awards
The building design was given recognition during the Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC) Lieutenant-Governor of BC Awards with a medal in 2006
