Congratulations to Dr. Stephen Yip, recipient of the 2025 University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine Distinguished Achievement Award for Overall Excellence – Mid-Career. This award recognizes faculty members who have made outstanding contributions in areas such as teaching, research, mentorship, or service, and who exemplify the Faculty’s commitment to excellence and innovation in health and health care.

Dr. Yip’s research focuses on neuro-oncology and advanced diagnostics, contributing valuable knowledge and advancements in the field. He has authored over 200 peer-review publications in oncologic neuropathology, cancer genetics and biology, molecular diagnostics, and deep learning and is a contributing author and senior author to the World Health Organization Classification of Tumours of the Central Nervous System, the international standard for cancer classification. His work as first author on recurrent CIC mutations in oligodendroglioma, a form of low-grade glioma, has been cited 355 times since 2012, and received the Jeremy Jass Prize for Excellence in Pathology Research. He also dedicates significant effort to mentorship and the training of research and clinical trainees, fostering the next generation of experts in the field. He holds several leadership roles, such as Medical Director of Clinical Cancer Genomics and Pathologist for the Personalized OncoGenomics (POG) Program at BC Cancer, and Chair of the Royal College Neuropathology Examination Committee.
