In our current climate crisis, we know the health of our planet impacts human health and, most importantly in our context, has implications on cancer incidence and outcomes. As the healthcare industry is a major contributor to greenhouse gases, BC Cancer has taken responsibility to evaluate our contributions to this crisis and is taking action to ensure innovative and sustainable solutions to tackle this problem.

Recognizing nurses present the largest professional group at BC Cancer and their embedded nature in clinical practice, oncology nurses are well positioned to identify opportunities to address climate-related challenges within the clinical environment, and act as drivers of actionable solutions to improve and promote planetary health within cancer care. The Planetary Health Nursing Internship program was created to support nurses in actioning this important work.

Each cohort in this program will provide a 12 week internship that includes quality improvement and knowledge translation training, mentorship and resource support for direct-care nurses interested in implementing a planetary health initiative. There will be one internship spot available per cohort for each regional centre.
