Project Title: Enteral feeding during head and neck cancer treatment across BC Cancer: Exploring current practices and patients’ experiences

Project Description: We are proposing to investigate how often patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) treated across BC Cancer (BCC) centres require enteral feeding. Enteral feeding, commonly referred to as “tube feeding,” uses a tube to deliver food and fluids directly into the stomach or intestines when eating becomes difficult during cancer treatment. Our goal is to gather details on how often and when in the treatment trajectory this is done at each regional BCC centre. This can help guide clinical decisions and improve the patient experience. We will collect this data by reviewing past medical records (i.e., a retrospective chart review) and by learning about patients’ experiences through a focus group.

Project Aim: The aim of this project is to describe enteral feeding practices and experiences among HNC patients at BCC. More specifically, we aim to identify how common enteral nutrition is among people with HNC at each BCC centre, including timing of insertion, the type of feeding tube, and the duration of use across all treatment modalities (radiation, chemotherapy and concurrent chemoradiation). We also aim to engage people with lived-experience of HNC and enteral feeding to co-design a conversation guide that will serve as a resource for physicians when they introduce enteral feeding to patients.

Research Questions: What is the incidence of enteral nutrition among people with HNC treated at BC Cancer centres? Followed by our secondary research question of: What discussion points would survivors of HNC wish oncologists include when discussing EN?
