The BC Cancer Nursing and Allied Health Research and Knowledge Translation department in partnership with UBC Critical Research in Health and Healthcare Inequities (CRiHHI) will be hosting a presentation on Promoting Health Equity in the Cancer Care Sector: Toward Equity-Oriented Cancer Care on November 16.

Despite clinical advances and publicly funded healthcare in Canada, alarming differences exist in cancer outcomes for people who experience significant health and social inequities, including higher cancer mortality and advanced cancers at diagnosis. Such outcomes are linked to the compounding effects of racism, stigma, discrimination, and other intersecting barriers, which create persistent inequities in accessing care at all points in the cancer trajectory. A key pathway to addressing this health equity gap and improving access to cancer care includes integrating equity-oriented health care in the cancer care sector.

In this presentation, UBC and BC Cancer Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. Tara Horrill will discuss some of the root causes of current inequities in the cancer care sector, the need for organizational-and systems-level changes, and the potential impact of integrating equity-oriented health care approaches within the cancer care sector to improve access to care and health care experiences for those most impacted by health and social inequities.
