We are evaluating the impact of the existing team-based care model within BC Cancer in a research study.

The study team developed an evidence brief and infographic

Background:

The British Columbia (BC) government is investing significantly towards the implementation of team-based care (TBC) within BC Cancer. Phased over two years, TBC implementation involves purposeful efforts towards:

  1. Establishing/expanding multidisciplinary care teams,
  2. Optimizing scope of practice
  3. Increasing team consistency.

Purpose:

This study evaluates the experiences of approximately 400 healthcare providers across BC Cancer’s 6 Regional Cancer Centres.

Study Purpose:

  • To conduct an early-phase evaluation of the implementation of TBC at BC Cancer over a two-year period.
  • To study the experiences of staff (e.g., unit clerks, etc.) and clinicians (e.g., physicians, nurses, etc.) who work in a team-based model of care at BC Cancer.

Study Objective:

  1. To examine the association between elements of TBC and perceptions of team effectiveness.
  2. To explore the facilitators and barriers of team effectiveness.

Study:

A series of 5 surveys are administered every 6 months over a 2-year period to prospectively evaluate the ongoing implementation of TBC. The baseline survey was launched in May 2023, where 299 program employees—including physicians, nurses, and unit clerks—working within TBC were invited to participate. We have subsequently completed 2 follow-up surveys in 2024 and will finish the last 2 surveys in 2025. The survey included both validated and researcher-developed questions on team composition, team consistency, team effectiveness, scope of practice, and demographics. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and regression analyses, and qualitative data using content analysis.
