Improving the care experiences and quality of life of people with cancer-related spinal cord injury in B.C.
Co-Principal Investigators: Bonnie Leung (BCC), Dr. Cheryl Ho (BCC), Dr. Chris McBride (SCI BC)
In collaboration with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) BC, Vancouver Spine Surgery Institute, and BC Cancer, we are conducting a multi-phase study to examine the care outcomes, barriers to care and unmet needs of people affected by cancer-related SCI in BC. The goal of this project is to develop an evidence-informed, multidisciplinary care pathway to improve care experiences and quality of life of people living with cancer-related SCI.
Phase 1: Examining Patterns of Cancer-Related SCI from 2011-2021 in B.C.
Using the Vancouver Coastal Health Spine Database and data from BC Cancer, we are conducting a retrospective chart review to identify trends in the incidence of cancer-relates SCI and examine the cancer and cancer care outcomes of people diagnosed with cancer-related SCI in BC.
Phase 2: Identifying Care Gaps
We will conduct semi-structured interviews with people with lived-experience of cancer related SCI, informal caregivers, and health care professionals to examine the SCI and cancer related care experiences, unmet needs, and challenges of supporting people affected by cancer-related SCI.
Phase 3:Envisioning the Future of Care for People Living with Cancer-Related SCI in B.C.
Findings from phase 1 and 2 of the project will be shared and used to facilitate discussions with key stakeholders to an action plan that will better support the unique needs of people affected by cancer-related SCI.
GOALThrough consensus building discussions in phase 3, we will collaborate with stakeholders to formalize an action plan with the goal of piloting innovative programs with partnering organizations. |
