Our multi-disciplinary research team from the University of the Fraser Valley, University of British Columbia, and BC Cancer gratefully acknowledges funding support from the Alzheimer's Society of Canada.

 With age the primary risk factor for both cancer and dementia, there are increasing numbers of people living with both diagnoses as our population ages. These patients have been found to have worse outcomes than those who do not have dementia. Currently a small body of research has highlighted the significant challenges faced by these patients, their caregivers, and the care providers tasked with meeting their unique care needs.

We are currently conducting a two-phase study at BC Cancer designed to add to this emerging area of scholarship and support dementia-friendly cancer care.

 

Phase one will aim to better understand the experiences of cancer patients living with dementia, their caregivers, and their BC Cancer care providers.

 

In phase two the findings will inform the development and implementation of a targeted Dementia-Friendly education module for BC Cancer care providers.
