The Bone Metastases and Exercise (BME) Hub is a new platform designed to provide information on exercise recommendations for people with bone metastases. This comprehensive resource was developed through a co-design process, involving key stakeholders—patients, healthcare practitioners, and exercise professionals - to ensure it met the needs and expectations of all users.

The BME Hub was develop to support use of the evidence-based “Exercise Recommendations for People with Bone Metastases” which were developed by the International Bone Metastases Exercise Working Group and published in JCO Oncology Practice in 2022. The BME Hub is also shaped by the real-world experiences and insights of those directly involved in cancer care and management.

Patients

  • Provides informative handouts and webinars that provides knowledge about their condition and the beneficial impacts of exercise 

  • Directory of exercise professionals specializing in cancer management  

 

Healthcare Professionals 

  • Health information tool to help to develop safe and effective exercise prescriptions tailored to the specific individual needs.  

  • Bridge the communication gap between the cancer care and exercise professionals who may be working outside of cancer clinics.  

 

GOAL

Help patients to gather information to effectively communicate specific details from the cancer care team to exercise professionals. Create better patient care plans, while maintaining patient information privacy. 

 

Looking ahead, the BME Hub will add professional development  opportunities scheduled for rollout in Fall 2024. These opportunities are designed to further educate and train healthcare providers and exercise professionals on the most current recommendations on  exercise for people with bone metastases.

By combining rigorous research, collaborative development, and practical tools tailored for each group of knowledge users, the BME Hub stands as an important resource in the ongoing effort to improve the quality of life and health outcomes for individuals living with bone metastases. The integration of scientific insights with user-friendly applications ensures that the BME Hub will continue to be a vital asset for patients, healthcare professionals, and exercise practitioners alike.

International Bone Metastases Exercise Working Group  

The International Bone Metastases Exercise Working Group (IBMEWG) was convened in 2018 to develop best practice recommendations based on published research, clinical experience, and expert opinion using (1) a modified Delphi survey, (2) a systematic review, and (3) a survey of physicians and nurse practitioners, (4) an in-person consensus meeting, and (5) extensive stakeholder engagement process.
