Drs. Maryam Darvishian and Parveen Bhatti published in Journal of Medical Virology on the association between markers of immune response at hospital admission and COVID‐19 disease severity and mortality

Welcoming Dr. Tim Lee as Department Head, Population Health Sciences

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Tim Lee as Department Head. Dr. Lee has served in an interim leadership role for several years and has been part of the department (former Cancer Control Research) for over three decades. His long-standing involvement provides deep institutional knowledge and continuity, which will be invaluable as the department builds on its strengths and expands its research portfolio.

Department seminar brings staff and trainees together

Thank you to everyone who attended the recent Department Seminar on February 26, 2026. More than 50 staff and students gathered at the Diamond Family Theatre and online, reflecting the strong engagement across our department. 

The seminar provided an opportunity to share program updates and highlight ongoing research initiatives. We were also pleased to welcome former Department Head, Rick Gallagher, whose attendance reflected the department's strong and continuing connection to its leadership and history. 

Special Talk Recap: Critical Career Readiness Skills

We were pleased to host a well-attended Special Talk on Thursday, July 24 as part of our Summer Student Get-together Series. The session brought together students, trainees, recent graduates, and department members interested in exploring career paths.

The talk "Critical Career Readiness Skills," explored how today’s evolving job landscape calls for adaptable and transferable skills.

Dr. Helen McTaggart-Cowan has been appointed to Scientist in the Cancer Control Research department

Stuart Peacock, CCR department head, and Magali Coustalin, administrative manager, are very pleased to announce that Dr. Helen McTaggart-Cowan has been appointed to the role of Scientist in the department of Cancer Control Research.  Dr. McTaggart-Cowan has been a valued member of the ARCC team in CCR since 2010.  Her ongoing work is in the area of Health Services Research and Cancer Survivorship, and currently, she is developing a program with an overarching research aim to tailor health services to meet the diverse needs of cancer survivors.

Multi-Channel Content Based Image Retrieval Method for Skin Diseases Using Similarity Network Fusion and Deep Community Analysis

Congratulations, Yuheng Wang, for publishing his work on content-based image processing. This is the best AI system so far for automatically retrieving images with similar diagnoses from a database. The main contribution of the proposed system is that it can work with databases of multiple data types while avoiding the problem of dimensionality bias between different modalities.
