Job Summary

The Computational Biologist participates in developing, improving and maintaining bioinformatics tools for high-throughput processing pipelines. The Computational Biologist specifies, implements, tests and maintains bioinformatics computer applications and systems, and participates in the code walk-throughs and design and review of bioinformatics software solutions. The Computational Biologist will also assist in the packaging and distribution of developed tools and analysis results to the scientific community, and will contribute to the preparation of scientific publications.

Duties

 
  • Codes in Python and specifies, implements, tests, and maintains bioinformatics pipelines and applications as assigned.
  • Assists with devising or modifying systems to solve complex problems associated with high throughput pipelines, considering computer equipment capacity and limitations, operating time and form of desired results.
  • Participates in code walk-throughs and reviews of the coded solutions to PEP8 standards.
  • Participates in the design and build of database and software solutions taking performance into consideration.
  • Coordinates production problem resolution for assigned applications, including working with other technical teams.
  • Evaluates third-party software and incorporates new systems into legacy systems.
  • Produces written documentation of algorithms, validations, SOPs, and other processes related to pipeline updates and procedures as required.
  • Presents results of bioinformatics software testing internally and externally.
  • Performs literature searches, testing and validation of new data analysis software related to bioinformatics pipelines.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience

  • Graduation from a recognized Bachelor of Applied Science or Bachelor of Science Program in either Computer Science, Biological Sciences, or equivalent program.
  • Two (2) years of recent related experience in a bioinformatic setting or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience acceptable to the GSC Group Leaders.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated expertise with Python or other similar high level languages for application in data analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to program and run analysis in a high throughput bioinformatics production environment.
  • Functional knowledge of distributed version control systems, such as GIT.
  • Functional knowledge of Agile development and ticketing systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with bioinformatics workflow managers (e.g. Nextflow).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Job Summary

The Aparicio lab is developing new single-cell genome and transcriptome methods for tracking clonal trajectories at the single-cell level in patient tissues and to gain a better understanding of the tumour microenvironment. Our researchers use the latest single-cell genomics technologies to rapidly identify genes that are involved in the development of cancer. This position will be working on the Single-Cell Genomics Platform on research projects currently ongoing in the lab. The successful candidate will be providing technical guidance, expertise, technology development and support to both internal/external researchers using the single-cell genomics platform; located at 2 separate research facilities in Vancouver, B.C.

We are seeking a highly-motivated and highly skilled individual with expertise or experience in single-cell genomics, liquid handling robotics, and/or next-generation sequencing with a strong background in molecular biology. The successful applicant will work full-time under the direction and supervision of Dr. Samuel Aparicio, Principal Investigator, and his designate. Individuals with experience using liquid handling robotics are considered an asset. Experience with bioinformatics approaches to biological data and familiarity with the handling of genomics and next-generation sequencing data will be an advantage. This position will provide the candidate with a high leel of exposure to single-cell genomics and translational research, as well as, providing opportunities to work collaboratively with industry partners and other researchers globally; the position start date is flexible.


Organizational Status
Aparicio Lab is located in the department of Molecular Oncology at BC Cancer Research Institute in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The candidate will report directly to Dr. Samuel Aparicio, or Laboratory Research and Operations Manager, in addition, the applicant may assist in overseeing the technical work of students and trainees.

Work Performed

  • Plans and performs experiments utilizing established complex procedures and/or techniques for investigating single-cell genomics, involving the use of liquid handling robotics and 10x genomics platforms.
  • Collaborates with PI and team members to support the development project pipelines, and technical experiments.   
  • Visualize and analyze cells using microscopy and flow cytometry.
  • Generation, preparation and submission of next-generation sequencing libraries.
  • Using an LMIS system to track and record sample data
  • Provide technical expertise and support in molecular biology, protein biochemistry, tissue culture and virology
  • Develop and implement standard operating protocols (SOPs).
  • Maintains laboratory records and experimental data.

Canada’s Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre (GSC) of the BC Cancer Research Institute is a state-of-the-art, large scale, high throughput, clinically accredited genomics and bioinformatics facility in one of the most beautiful, diverse and eclectic cities in the world.

As an Assistant Bioinformatics Coordinator in the Clinical Panels Informatics team at the GSC, you will be responsible for supervising, coordinating and supporting activities related to clinical panel informatics through process monitoring, auditing and reporting as well as development, testing and validation of new clinical bioinformatics processes. The Assistant Bioinformatics Coordinator will report to the Bioinformatics Coordinator and is anchored within a team of exceptional computational scientists and programmers, who collaborate directly on the development and maintenance of robust, cost efficient, and competitive clinical genomics pipelines. By working within the GSCs bioinformatics facility, you will collaborate with clinical and research computational biologists and programmers across bioinformatics groups, clinical lab staff and the quality assurance group to deliver clinical diagnostic genomic testing for patients in BC.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assists the Bioinformatics Coordinator in the day to day activities of the Bioinformatics group by performing duties such as providing input on quantity and quality of work, making recommendations for improvements, workflow and procedures.
  2. Coordinates projects of the Bioinformatics group by performing duties such as chairing project-specific meetings and provides project status reports to the Bioinformatics Coordinator, with suggestions towards any required improvement of project management, task allocation and overall process.
  3. Develops and implements assays to monitor project progress and measure project accomplishments to ensure that appropriate project focus is maintained and to provide feedback to staff.
  4. Provides supervisory support to the Bioinformatics group by performing duties such as:

         a.   Orientating new staff.

         b.   Providing input to the Bioinformatics Coordinator on training requirements.

         c.   Providing input to the Bioinformatics Coordinator on the establishment of clear definitions of responsibility for employees.

         d.   Assigning workload assignments and establishing work schedules.

         e.   Reviewing and establishing work priorities and adjusting work schedules to ensure clinical priorities are met.

         f.    Completing performance reviews and addressing performance issues in conjunction with the Bioinformatics Coordinator.

5.         Participates in the recruitment of staff through methods such as interviewing internal and external applicants and forwards hiring recommendations.

6.         Participates in the implementation of quality improvement programs to ensure clinical assays are provided in the most efficient and effective way by performing duties such as:

         a.         Monitoring quality and quantity of service and information provided by the bioinformatics group and identifying areas for change and/or improvement.

         b.         Generating quality metrics and reports to evaluate quality and robustness of clinical bioinformatic pipelines

         c.      Develops clear and concise documentation

7.         Assesses practical needs for identified clinical priorities for GSC in conjunction with the Bioinformatics Coordinator and Analysis Group Leader.

8.         Participates in a variety of meetings by performing duties such as providing and/or receiving information and contributing to decision making.

9.         Participates, in conjunction with the Bioinformatics Coordinator, in determining the computer infrastructure necessary for successful completion of projects and ensured viability of research programs by performing duties such as providing input and recommendations regarding purchasing decisions related to hardware, software and related items for the clinical bioinformatics platform.

10.       Interprets statistical analyses and makes recommendations for review including preparing reports on statistical findings for publication and presentation both internally and externally of the GSC.

11.       Generates specification for pipeline improvements/implementations such as determining user requirements, examining and identifying problems with existing systems and recommending modifications to and/or new systems; provides details of cost benefit analysis

12.       Performs technical functions related to the bioinformatic functions of the GSC.

13.       Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience

  • Graduation from a recognized Bachelor’s program in a related discipline such as Biochemistry, Genetics, Computer Science.  A minimum of four (4) years of recent related experience in a research and or clinical laboratory including experience in computer programming and quantitative data analysis, handling next generation sequencing data, database development and data storage schemas or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience acceptable to the GSC Group Leaders.

Skills and Abilities

  • Comfortable working in a Linux environment, including experience with shell scripting and common command-line tools.
  • Proven expertise with Python, R, and/or other similar high-level languages
  • Functional knowledge of distributed version control systems, such as Git.
  • Demonstrated experience with analysis of next generation sequencing data with an understanding of standards and guidelines for validating clinical bioinformatics analysis pipelines using these technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to accept responsibility and work independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise staff and to efficiently organize work assignments and establish priorities to meet set milestones.
  • Excellent organizational, leadership interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to write technical documents including validations and procedure manuals.
  • Experience with bioinformatics workflow managers and database development would be considered an asset.

Job Summary

The basic and translational research performed in the Sorensen laboratory seeks to improve basic knowledge and treatment options in Ewing sarcoma and other high-risk pediatric cancers. This position will mainly work on the characterization of pathways facilitating adaptation of pediatric cancer cells to stress and promoting metastasis.

The Research Assistant (RA) will be responsible, under supervision, for laboratory work including biochemical, molecular, and cell-based analyses, and in vivo mouse procedures.


Organizational Status
The Sorensen Lab is located at the BC Cancer Research Centre. The RA reports directly to the Primary Investigator and different study leads within the research group. The position requires to use a high degree of initiative, tact and professional judgement in carrying out responsibilities related to the research. The incumbent will also be required to report to the primary investigator and study leads in a clear and timely manner.

Work Performed

Laboratory Research Duties:

  • The incumbent will be responsible for laboratory duties which include, but not limited to, western blotting, immunoprecipitation, PCR and RT-PCR, plasmid preparation, bacterial culture, general buffer preparation, and mammalian/cancer cell culture, mammalian transfection/lentiviral transduction, immunofluorescent staining, microscopy, and cellular/molecular biology (cell proliferation, death, cytotoxicity, etc.), preparing samples for proteomics (e.g. mass spectrometry). Training for additional research techniques will be provided as needed.
  • In addition to general laboratory duties, the incumbent will divide their bench time among several concurrent projects, thus efficient time management of bench work to various projects will be an asset.

Animal Research Duties:

  • Maintains current knowledge of, and ensures compliance with, animal care regulations. As part of this, the incumbent will acquire animal research center handling and certification of techniques and procedures as it relates to required mouse work.
  • Maintains daily care of laboratory mice including, primary tumour caliper measurements, and logging changes in animal health and general health conditions. The incumbent will also keep an up-to-date record of mice and mouse cages using Mosaic software.
  • Performs mouse surgeries and techniques including blood collection, tumour implantation, injection of tumor cells (subcutaneous and tail-vein injections), saline/vehicle solutions, and investigational anti-cancer drugs. The incumbent will be also responsible for small animal bioluminescence (IVIS) imaging of mouse tumours, and other organs, as well as harvesting of mouse tissues.
  • The incumbent will also perform ancillary laboratory techniques such as media/drug preparation, cell culture, instrument sterilizations, polymerase chain reaction analysis (for genotyping), and receiving and processing laboratory animal care supplies.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
When dealing with laboratory chemicals, the incumbent will exercise judgement based on the Biosafety and Laboratory Safety provided by online training modules. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment at all times and if in doubt seek advice from those that she/he may report to.

Supervision Received
The Research Assistant will work mostly independently from day to day. The Research Assistant will be supervised by the Principal Investigator with additional guidance provided by the study leads, and will be expected to report his/her results to them regularly.

Supervision Given
The Research Assistant is not required to directly supervise anyone. She/he may be required to allow a student or new staff member to shadow them, or serve as a resource for undergraduate students.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Graduate Student

Three graduate student positions are available at the Department of Molecular Oncology, BC Cancer Research Institute for the development of novel radiopharmaceuticals for detection and radioligand therapy of cancer. The graduate student candidates will register through the Interdisciplinary Oncology Program (www.iop.ca), University of British Columbia, and pursue either an MSc or PhD degree.

The student candidates will conduct research on the design and synthesis of imaging probes and radiotherapeutic agents targeting biomarkers overexpressed in cancers. Research activities will involve the production and isolation of radioisotopes, peptide and multi-step organic synthesis, and radiolabeling small molecules/peptides/antibodies for PET/CT and SPECT/CT imaging, biodistribution, and radioligand therapy studies in various animal models.

Qualified candidates should have a bachelor degree preferably in chemistry, biology or pharmacy with interest in the development of cancer-targeted radiopharmaceuticals. Radiochemistry Postdoctoral Fellow Position

Three postdoctoral fellow positions are immediately available at the BC Cancer Research Institute in Vancouver, Canada for the development of novel radiopharmaceuticals for cancer imaging and radioligand therapy. The postdoctoral fellows will conduct research in the design and synthesis of radioligands targeting biomarkers overexpressed in cancers. Research activities will involve the production and isolation of radioisotopes, peptide and multi-step organic synthesis, and radiolabeling small molecules, peptides and antibodies with various imaging and radiotherapeutic isotopes (F-18, Ga-68, Zr-89, Tc-99m, I-123, In-111, Lu-177, Ac-225 …).

Qualified candidates should have a PhD degree in radiochemistry, organic or medicinal chemistry with experience in peptide or multi-step organic synthesis. The Aparicio lab is developing new single cell genome and transcriptome methods for tracking clonal trajectories at single cell level in patient tissues and patient-derived xenografts (PDX). The lab is highly multidisciplinary and highly productive (Laks et al, Cell 2019, Salehi et al Nature 2021, Funnell et al Nature 2022) and is well funded for single cell analysis of genomes and transcriptomes in cancer. The Aparicio lab is developing new single cell genome and transcriptome methods for tracking clonal trajectories at single cell level in patients and patient-derived xenografts. The project involves collaborating on an exciting project mapping clonal dynamics in human cancers under drug treatment with new single cell methods. The post holder will also have the opportunity to interact as part of the international Welcome LEAP Delta Tissue project and an exciting new program in the biology of epithelium from high risk carriers of BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations. These projects are bringing new measurement methods and computational techniques to the 3D reconstruction of tumours, and mapping drug sensitivity and drug combinations using sgRNA/CRISPR methods in vivo. The program works closely with UBC departments of statistics and computer science and the New York Genome Center NY, on the development of new models for single cell data and cancer evolution. Some experience with bioinformatics approaches to biological data and familiarity with handling of genomics data will be an advantage.

A postdoctoral/research fellow position is available, working on an exciting international project to define additional mechanisms and target engagement of G4 ligands in cancer genomes, utilizing single cell sequencing and chemical biology methods. The Aparicio lab is developing small molecule ligands of G-quadruplex structures in DNA as a therapeutic, based on recent success from the lab demonstrating for the first time clinical proof of principle (Hilton et al, Nat. Comms 2022) for a G4 binder. We are currently looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join Dr. Andrew Roth’s and Dr. Adi Steif’s computational cancer genomics research groups at the BC Cancer Research Institute (BCCRI).

The current position is for a candidate with experience developing and applying computational methods to analyze high throughput biological data. The successful applicant will be part of an exceptional multidisciplinary team developing and applying single cell multiomic methods to study evolution and disease transformation risk in follicular lymphoma (FL). Funded by a multi-year Terry Fox New Frontiers Program Project Grant, the project is a close collaboration with clinicians, molecular biologists and bioinformatic scientists. Research Assistant Tech 3 – Animal Research Technician

Job Summary
Researchers in the Department of Molecular Oncology at BC Cancer Research Institute use the latest technologies to rapidly identify genes that are involved in the development of cancer. We are seeking a highly-motivated, organized, driven individual with an interest or past experience with working with research animals in an academic setting. This entry level position will provide the successful candidate with an opportunity to work and learn within an academic research environment where continual training and learning is greatly encouraged. The core focus of this position will be handling and working with research animals, as well as, conducting research experiments on animals; hands-on training will be provided to the successful candidate. This animal tech position will be involved with performing research in drug pharmacology directed at human tumours, with assays in immunodeficient mice (xenotransplants).

Organizational Status
The successful applicant will report to the Principal Investigator or his/her delegate and may assist in overseeing technical work of students and trainees.

Work Performed

  • Perform and/or oversee animal procedures involving immunization, oral gavage, injections, tumour inoculation, tumour volume measurements, blood and tissue collection, surgical procedures, necropsy, and post-operative care.
  • Assist in the daily care of transgenic animals and maintains colonies of human tumour bearing immunodeficient animals.
  • Daily health monitoring and care of laboratory animals.
  • Plan and perform animal experiments utilizing complex procedures and/or techniques.
  • Be able to recognize and resolve behavioral and/or housing issues; may provide technical instructions and training for other staff and/or trainees
  • Process tissue samples and carry out primary cell isolation as instructed.
  • Carry out laboratory techniques following standard operating protocols ages, tables, graphs and charts.
  • Maintain both laboratory and laboratory records of both animal data and experimental data; when required to summarize results in research reports and lab presentations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • On a rotation basis, must be available for emergency calls 24/7 and respond appropriately.



Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Bioinformatics

Job Summary:

The candidate would work within a dynamic and vibrant lab with a proven track record of outstanding achievements and contributions in breast oncology research. This position allows the candidate to contribute bold and innovative research that can be translated to new understanding in the evolutionary processes that drive cancers.

This position's primary focus in the lab will be to lead and to participate in projects based on candidate's desire concentrated on investigating genetics of breast oncology, cancer evolutionary, and development of novel therapeutics. Using the wide network of connections and collaborations of the principal investigator, and extensive biomedical resources at the institution, candidates will be able to build on the existing research of the lab to quickly start up their own research projects.

The position will provide a unique opportunity for mentoring trainees, supervising analysts and interacting with industry. This is an excellent platform to receive outstanding training to gain the important skills for a successful medical research career in academia or industry.

This funded position with the University of British Columbia, at the BC Cancer Research Centre allows the candidate to flourish under the guidance of an experienced mentor.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UBC is a hybrid, academically intensive Department within the UBC Faculty of Medicine whose activities span a broad spectrum of teaching, research, and academic service, often performed in the milieu of clinical practice, and are ultimately devoted to improving the care, treatment, and well-being of patients.  The Department offers academic degrees at the bachelor’s (Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLSc)) and graduate (MSc, PhD) levels with the graduate program, one of the largest in the Faculty of Medicine, which has been recognized by UBC for its quality. The Department plays a major role in the MD undergraduate program and offers an accredited residency-training program. Faculty members participate across a spectrum of research from basic investigative to translational to clinical applied research and are recognized locally, nationally and internationally for their excellence.

Work Performed:

  • Management and supervision of trainees;
  • May be involved in recruitment and training of trainees;
  • Performing regular reviews of the relevant literature;
  • Planning and designing of experiments;

Research Assistant 2

We are seeking a highly-motivated, organized, driven individual with an interest or past experience with working with research animal in an academic setting. This entry level position will provide candidate with an opportunity to work and learning within an academic research environment where continual training and learning is greatly encouraged as part of the lab culture. You will become an integral part of the animal research team, providing technical support on animal research for multiple core projects within the lab.

Radiochemistry Postdoctoral Fellow Position

One postdoctoral fellow position is immediately available at the BC Cancer Research Institute in Vancouver, Canada for the development of novel radiopharmaceuticals for cancer imaging and radiotherapy. The postdoctoral fellow will conduct research in the design and synthesis of radioligands targeting biomarkers overexpressed in cancers. Research activities will involve the production and isolation of radioisotopes, peptide and multi-step organic synthesis, and radiolabeling small molecules, peptides and antibodies with various imaging and radiotherapeutic isotopes (F-18, Ga-68, Zr-89, Tc-99m, I-123, In-111, Lu-177, Ac-225 …).

Qualified candidates should have a PhD degree in radiochemistry, organic or medicinal chemistry with experience in peptide or multi-step organic synthesis. Experience with HPLC, micro-scale reactions, and radiochemistry is strongly desirable but not required. The ability to perform research in a collaborative environment is required including excellent oral and written communication skills. This joint position between BC Cancer Research Institute and University of British Columbia (UBC) is for a period of two years with the possibility of renewal.

Research Animal Technician 2

JOB SUMMARY

In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. These positions supervise designated staff by scheduling and assigning work, and assist in daily animal care operations by leading various health monitoring and colony management programs, trouble-shooting minor issues and performing other administrative tasks. These positions also maintain the daily care of laboratory mice and perform various surgical procedures and laboratory techniques.

                                               

DUTIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Develops, implements, reviews and updates animal care standard operating procedures for assigned area.

• Leads various animal care programs such as health monitoring and colony management.

• Maintains current knowledge of, and ensures compliance with, animal care regulations.

• Supervises designated staff by scheduling and assigning work, providing orientation and training and monitoring performance.

• Maintains daily care of laboratory mice including maintaining adequate food and water levels and observing mice for general health conditions.

• Performs surgeries and techniques including blood collection, surgical implantations, tumour implantation, injection of solutions, collection of tissues and organs and embryo manipulations, and cryopreservation.

• Performs laboratory techniques such as media preparation, cell culture and hormone preparation, and polymerase chain reaction analysis as required.

• Leads training programs, prepares and gives presentations and orients and trains staff and animal users on proper animal care theory, protocols, techniques and procedures.

• Changes and cleans animal cages, bottles and racks.

• Performs general cleaning of animal facilities including disinfecting equipment, walls, floors, rooms, etc.

• Performs census duties such as counting cages and reporting cage numbers.

• Receives and processes laboratory animal care supplies.

                                               

QUALIFICATIONS

A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to graduation from a recognized program in Animal Health or Veterinary Technology, or a Bachelor’s program in an appropriate discipline (e.g. Animal Science); plus five (5) years of recent related experience in a research laboratory, including two (2) years in a supervisory capacity.
