Many AYAs with breast cancer may struggle to find the information and support they need. These challenges can be even greater for AYAs who face extra barriers because of unfair social conditions. We aim to conduct a year-long team-building initiative involving diverse AYAs with breast cancer—especially those often underserved or overlooked—as well as community organizations and cancer care providers, to understand their needs and priorities.
This research study received funding from the Canadian Cancer Society and aims to identify and understand the unique needs of AYAs with breast cancer. The challenges that AYAs may face during their survivorship journey are distinct from older patients and may include establishing self-identify, pursing education and careers and family planning. This study will be co-designed with patient partners to use persona-scenario exercises in small groups, gaining insights on AYA survivorship needs. The use of persona-scenarios allows researchers to gain access to participant’s needs and information. Study findings will identify research priorities for designing a virtual survivorship model for AYAs with breast cancer.
