KT is the process of translating rapidly evolving scientific knowledge into health care practices and organizational policies to achieve the best possible outcomes for the patients, families, and communities we serve. The KT Challenge is supporting nursing and allied health teams to develop and implement projects that will improve practice, organizational policy, and patient care.

“Show Me the Evidence: Doing KT at the Point-of-Care for Oncology Nursing Practice”. Raman Sandhu, Michelle LaFreniere, Megan Crosby, Jagbir Kaur, Alesia Clark, Scott Beck, and Heather Kilgour. Mentor: Dr. Nelly D. Oelke.

This project will develop a communication tool that will support the implementation of new or revised nursing practices and policy at BC Cancer. The goal is to display greater transparency of the evidence that is informing practice changes. The tool will provide an organized, visually appealing, practical, and consistent approach to identifying the foundation of new practice changes.

“Patient Decision Aid: Pre-treatment G-tube insertion for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients”. Terry Lok, Eleah Stringer, Evelyn Wu, and Samantha Gamble. Mentor: Dr. Nick Bansback.

Patients with head and neck cancer are at high risk for malnutrition and swallowing difficulties. For patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy a feeding tube may be needed to help consume adequate nutrition, fluids, and medications through and immediately following treatment. The decision of whether or not to accept a feeding tube can be distressing. This project will create and implement a tool for patients to use with clinicians that provides information on feeding tubes including the benefits and potential risks. This tool will help patients make a fully-informed and confident decision on feeding tubes that is best in line with their personal health goals and values.
