Dr. Bhatti is Principal Investigator of an NIH-funded birth cohort study of 1000 children based in Guangzhou, China that will evaluate the impact of in utero exposures to ubiquitous environmental pollutants on vaccine efficacy during the first two years of life. Reduced efficacy of vaccination could have serious implications for the control of vaccine preventable disease in China (e.g. Hepatitis B and liver cancer) and around the world. Plans are underway to expand the cohort to include evaluations of the developing gut microbiome and its impacts on asthma and obesity.
