Research Interests:
Development of systems to induce the expansion of haematopoietic cells
The main focus of my work at the TFL is the development of systems to induce the expansion of haematopoietic stem and multipotential progentior cells from bone marrow. These cells are present at fairly low frequency in bone marrow and as a consequence it can often be difficult to obtain sufficient quantities of these cells to analyse the mechanisms that are involved in their commitment to individual lineages. Understanding the molecular basis of these processes is an important first step to designing specific strategies that will hopefully permit the eventual manipulation of the differentiation of these multipotent cells in several clinical scenarios where individual lineages are deficient e.g. following bone marrow transplantation
