Research Interests:
Image analysis of cells and tissuesAutomation of image and data analysis
My research involves the development of methods to extract useful information from images of cells and tissues. This process consists of image segmentation to identify relevant objects (such as cells and their components), followed by measurement of the identified objects.
Automation of image and data analysis and handling is an important aspect of this image analysis process, as it reduces the operator's errors and time commitment. The high content imaging screens used in Dr. Aparicio's laboratory involve a collection of tissue culture multi-well plates with up to half a million cells per plate; the large quantities of images and data generated by these screens require appropriate handling, processing and compression as well as effective database management. Robust algorithms are needed to handle the images and to compensate for the noise introduced during sample preparation and handling.
My research aims to facilitate the collection of repeatable and objective measurements from biological samples, with the ultimate goal of correlating these measurements to aspects of cell behaviour.
