    Research Interests:

  • Characterise the molecular features of columnar cell lesions (CCLs) of the breast in relation to in situ and invasive breast carcinomas.
  • Conduct a retrospective analysis to determine the frequency of CCLs and their epidemiology in relation to other breast risk factors.
  • Improve on the current clinical-pathological definition of CCLs.

  • Columnar cell lesions (CCLs) are one of the most common abrnormalities in the adult female human breast. CCLs represent a spectrum of histologic changes characterized by the presence of one to several layers of columnar-shaped epithelial cells in enlarged terminal duct lobular units. CCLs are increasingly being seen in core biopsies taken for the assessment of non-palpable microcalcifications. The etiology is unknown but may include estrogen-simulated growth mediated by ER-α. Histologic classification includes two broad groups: columnar cell change and columnar cell hyperplasia, with or without atypia. Immunohistochemical phenotype and genetic alterations in CCLs are not well studied.

My current research activity also includes work on METABRIC (Molecular Taxonomy of Breast Cancer International Consortium) project - an Anglo-Canadian International Breast Cancer study aiming to examine several thousands of breast tumours, using a combination of high resolution array-CGH, expression profiling and tissue microarray (TMA) analysis, and correlate the molecular profiles obtained with the clinical outcome of the tumours.
