Research Interests:
Heather joined the team as a Research Assistant in September 2003. Using molecular and cell biology, Heather explores ways to treat cancer by re-wiring the immune system to recognize and destroy tumour cells. Through investigation of interleukin-2 (IL-2) receptor activation at the biochemical level, mechanisms of T-cell proliferation will be elucidated that are of clinical importance for cancer immunotherapy.
Working with Dr. Jorg Michels, Heather also investigates the effects of novel drug treatments that target key processes responsible for prostate cancer treatment resistance. Using small molecule inhibitors such as ABT-737, an inhibitor of the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and Bcl-XL proteins, their research focuses on enhancing the effectiveness of chemotherapeutics in androgen-independent prostate cancer.
Investigation of the immune response to ovarian cancer is another important focus at the Deeley Research Centre. In collaboration with other co-workers, Heather examines the activation and signaling state of tumour-associated T cells that correlate with favourable clinical outcomes. The goal of this research is to develop future cancer immunotherapies that will improve the outcome for ovarian cancer patients.
