Cancer Education Retreat
Nominees to the Trev & Joyce Deeley Research Centre′s High School Internship Program 2004 were invited to attend a Cancer Education Retreat day in recognition for their success. Students will be ambassadors to the Research Centre for one year. We designed this Retreat to give the students a glimpse into the world of cancer research. They learned some key hands-on techniques and information that researchers use in the laboratory and clinic. Students participated in a seminar about cancer genomics, and worked closely with the staff of the research centre. Students divided their time between the lab and seminar sessions during the day. In the lab, the students performed Polymerase Chain Reactions (PCR). The students used PCR to determine whether or not cancer markers were present in patient samples of cDNA. They analyzed their PCR results in conjunction with patient clinical data to determine the best treatment options for their patients. Note: The patient samples were experimental only and were not actual patient samples. 2006 Ambassadors | Eric, Oak Bay and David, Claremont | Sara, Stelly's Secondary |
