Research Interests

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common human cancer throughout the body. For SCC in the oral cavity, patients suffer from a 5-year survival rate of 40-50%, a figure that has not improved significantly for the past 30 years. For oral SCC, premalignant changes become visible before SCC develops, offering the chance for early intervention to prevent progression to cancer. However, only 30% of oral premalignant lesions (OPLs) will progress to invasive carcinomas, imposing a dilemma of prioritizing treatment since lesions that progress to cancer can appear similar morphologically to those that never progress or even regress. It is now known that genetic alterations accumulate as cancer cell evolves, but the distinction of causal genetic events from random genomic instability that accumulate with time is an imperative question. My goal is to understand the early biological changes in the premalignant stages in order to rationally design prevention and treatment strategies.
