Non-invasive evaluation of changes in the tumour microenvironment (vascularization, oxygenation, and metabolism) that are associated with treatment or molecular changes:
Our group is interested in understanding how molecular changes in tumours are manifested in their microenvironment, and whether such changes can be monitored non-invasively to guide treatment strategies. We therefore use molecular techniques in a complementary fashion with non-invasive imaging (positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging) to study clinically relevant tumour models from the bottom up and top down. Presently, we have programs examining the effects of HER-2 overexpression on physiological functions and response to treatment in aggressive breast cancer tumours and the effects of liposomal drug treatment on the oxygenation and vascularity of colorectal tumours.
