Architecture Level
  • The Global Organization/Arrangements of cells within the epithelium can be quantified and modeled using different geometrical tools.
  • We developed a method which automatically extracts the centers of gravity of the nuclei located within a region of interest (Manual Delineation of Basal membrane and External membrane).
Euclidean Minimum Spanning Tree for Normal Epithelium and Moderate Dysplasia
  • We used the Euclidean Minimum Spanning Tree (Figure 2) - the minimum length tree that spans all the points is used to describe the arrangements of nuclei in the epithelium.
  • Statistical moments are computed from the distribution of the Length Vertices of the MST (Mean, Standard Deviation, Skewness, Kurtosis,...)
  • A Linear combination of these features is used to define a New Architectural Index
Architectural Index: From Subjective Grading to Quantitative Objective Scoring

The Architectural Index shown in Figure 3 may be used by the pathologist for the diagnosis of pre-neoplastic lesions.
