Early detection of lung cancer

Chemoprevention of lung cancer

I became interested in lung cancer during my specialist training in Australia. After treating many people with advanced and incurable lung cancer, I developed an interest in early detection of the disease. After completion of my training I was lucky to obtain a position as a Clinical Research Fellow with the University of British Columbia and the BCCA working with Dr Stephen Lam. I arrived in June 2000 and have recently completed a 2 year research fellowship. During this time, I have trained in autofluorescence bronchoscopy and endobronchial treatments such as electrocautery and brachytherapy. I have also been involved with chemoprevention trials in volunteers with bronchial dysplasia. In addition, as part of my involvement with the Lung Health Study I have been exploring the role of thoracic spiral CT scan in lung cancer screening. The combination of thoracic CT scan with image analysis of sputum cells and autofluorescence bronchoscopy looks promising as a screening algorithm.This has been a combined effort with Vancouver General Hospital Radiology Department. I will be staying as a Respiratory Physician at the BCCA and continue to be involved in further research in chemoprevention and early detection of lung cancer.
