Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of male cancer death after lung cancer, and is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Canadian men. Presently, the only useful therapy for advanced prostate cancer is medical or surgical withdrawal of the male sex hormone, testosterone. Unfortunately, there is inevitable relapse with ultimate progression to a hormone refractory state. Fortunately the problem can be studied owing to the availability of the gene which produces prostate specific antigen (PSA).

  • Over 200,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in North America each year (1997 estimates).
  • Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death.
  • Over 40,000 North American men die of the disease annually.
