Description
About one third of Canadians will develop cancer during their lifetime. The survival of cancer patients is increasing because of disease screening and advances in treatment. Predictive and prognostic factors have implications for physicians, patients, healthy people in the general population and their families. Survival depends on largely on the treatment that a patient receives and much of my research involves the comparison of different treatments at the BCCA. However, survival also depends on patient characteristics and tumor factors.
Several studies are underway. One is examining lung cancer patients in BC to determine whether sunlight exposure affects their survival. That research is being led by my graduate student Asef Javan. Other studies are examining the survival of patients in BC with gastric, esophageal, breast, cervix, colorectal and oral cancer. Another study is considering survival and other outcomes for patients who undergo bone marrow transplant as part of their cancer treatment. That research is being led by my graduate student Maryam Noparast. I am also involved in several treatment/outcome projects involving clinicians at the BCCA.
