The epidemiology of gastric and esophageal cancer

Description

The survival for these cancers depends on patient characteristics, tumor factors, treatment details and the health care system. That last variable is especially important for international comparisons. There is also concern about misclassification between gastric and esophageal disease. Many patients′ tumors involve both organs.

Several studies are underway. One completed study reviewed the survival of patients diagnosed with gastric and esophageal cancer in BC. Another study is comparing survival patterns of these patients in Iran and BC. I am also involved with studies that are collecting DNA specimens from patients in Iran and BC to determine the roles of certain genes, and to determine whether the effects of these genes are the same in different populations. This research is being led by my graduate student Morteza Bashash.
