Research Interests:

As Head of the Division of Medical Oncology and a Clinical Professor at the University of British Columbia, I am responsible for the clinical research component of the academic program in Medical Oncology and the Translational Research Program in the Advanced Therapeutics Section of the Division of Medical Oncology. In 1998, there are 18 medical oncologists at the Vancouver Cancer Center, 8 at the Vancouver Island Cancer Center, 6 at the Fraser Valley Cancer Center and 5 at the Cancer Center for the Southern Interior. There are four senior scientists in the Advanced Therapeutics Section of Medical Oncology and in addition, there are 6 residents and fellows in training at the Vancouver Cancer Center.

All oncologists have linkages to provincial tumor groups who propose treatment policies and participate in clinical trials. The Provincial Systemic Therapy Program provides the resources for patient care in the centers and drug therapy throughout the province. Members of the medical staff are all active in phase II and phase III studies and several at the Vancouver Cancer Center are leading phase I studies. Many individuals provide provincial, national and international leadership in specific tumor sites, particularly lymphoma, lung and breast cancer.

My own clinical research has principally involved phase I, II and III treatments for breast cancer, intermediate and high grade lymphomas, low grade lymphomas, Hodgkin's Disease and multiple myeloma. A special area of interest has been the management of lymphoproliferative diseases in older patients.
