A SUCCESSFUL TRAINING PROGRAM
Advanced Therapeutics provides outstanding training opportunities for undergraduate students, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, clinical fellows and oncology residents.
At the moment the program has five graduate students (all in UBC based training programs and co-supervised by clinical oncologists), five post-doctoral fellows, eight oncology residents as well as six undergraduate students from universities in British Columbia and Europe. The later is a testament to the international reputation of the members of Advanced Therapeutics and their capacity to provide oncology focused pharmaceutical training. Further, new opportunities are arising as a consequence of interactions with radiation oncology trainees interested in assessing the activity of novel agents that may interact with radiation therapy.
Graduate Studies
Training opportunities at the Ph.D. and Masters level are offered through the
Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of British Columbia. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Masters (M.Sc.) degrees in
Interdisciplinary Oncology,
Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, or
Pharmaceutical Sciences can be pursued within the Advanced Therapeutics Department. All students must meet the admission standards of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the graduate program prior to acceptance by Advanced Therapeutics faculty.
COURSE WORK
Course work is completed in the first year of the program allowing the student to focus on lab work in the following years. A wide range of courses are available at the university to meet the specific interests and program requirements of each student.
SEMINARS
In addition to university course work and direct experience in the lab, students will find a rich learning environment at the BC Cancer Research Centre with many opportunities to attend seminars given by world-class speakers from within the Centre and other institutions. In addition to these seminars, students are required to attend, and in their second and subsequent years present at, the Cancer Research Centre Student Seminar Series highlighting the work of post-docs and graduate students within the Centre.
