A SUCCESSFUL STRATEGY OF RECRUITING YOUNG ONCOLOGISTS WITH PROVEN RESEARCH EXPERTISE
Over the past six years the Medical Oncology Department at the Vancouver Cancer Centre has recruited outstanding oncologists who have completed research fellowships in renowned academic centres such as Harvard, the Mayo Clinic, Vanderbilt University, Tuebegin University, the European Organization for Cancer Research and Treatment. These oncologists have a particular interest and appropriate training in translational research. These include Drs. Chi, Chia, Gill, Laskin, Savage and Kollmannsberger. Dr. Chi has successfully obtained funding from the Department of Defense of the USA (DOD), the National Cancer Institute of Canada, and the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada, and has participated in over 34 clinical trial protocols, many of these are principal investigator and highest accruer. Drs. Chia has successfully obtained research funding from the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance, the National Cancer Institute of Canada and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Since joining the Cancer Agency he has participated in the development of 13 clinical trial protocols. Drs. Laskin and Gill are participating in a number of clinical trial protocols and are co-applicants on pending research grants. Dr. Kollmannsberger has a successful track record of obtaining competitive grant support and has published 15 first author peer reviewed papers over the past 5 years.
