THE FUNCTIONAL IMAGING PROGRAM
The BC Cancer Agency will provide unique opportunities for linking novel imaging approaches with preclinical and clinical studies of new agents. Advanced Therapeutics, in collaboration with the VGH Prostate Cancer Centre (Dr. Gleave), has supported a junior research scientist (Dr. Donald Yapp) who has already established preclinical programs integrating non-invasive imaging methods (PET and MRI) with the assessment of anticancer drug effects. Although many centres have PET available, and although increasing evidence suggests imaging will be an important aspect of defining treatment strategy and effectiveness, there are few centres that have the potential to capture the value of emerging imaging technologies with anticancer drug development/assessment programs. The newly acquired PET-CT at the BCCA will be utilized increasingly in new drug studies, including assessing its expanding role in this area.
