A WELL ESTABLISHED PHASE I / II CLINICAL TRIAL PROGRAM
The Vancouver Cancer centre has a rapidly growing Phase I, II and III clinical trials unit that is supported by Advanced Therapeutics and the clinical testing potential of the scientists and clinicians involved with this unit is expanding due to collaboration with other BCCA centres, other Canadian cancer treatment centres (e.g. PMH, McGill, Hamilton etc.), Cooperative oncology groups (including the NCIC), large pharmaceutical companies and emerging biotechnology companies. As well we have established links with a number of US centres including UCLA and the San Antonio Drug Development Institute. In aggregate, Advanced Therapeutics, the IDP and the Clinical trials unit are well positioned to be an influential center of the BC Cancer Agencys translational research efforts. This is already evidenced by an increasing number of first in man phase I clinical trials and an increase in the opportunities to be part of novel treatment programs. These enhance the potential for existing and emerging basic research (mechanisms of action) and applied research (pharmacokinetics, pharmacogenomics, correlative studies with targeted monotherapy and therapeutic studies with drug combinations and combination drug products) programs. The phase I program does a wide variety of studies including working with the National Cancer Institute of Canada, Clinical Trials Group (NCIC-CTG), large pharmaceutical companies, small companies and independent researchers.
